PROJECT: HERE’s Portrait Project: Documenting the real-life challenges of New York’s performing artists

HERE Arts Center seeks a part-time production assistant for 10-part web documentary series on the real-life challenges facing performing artists in New York City. 20 hours/week from January – May of 2010. Combination of in office, on-site, and at home work. No pay available. Can offer credit.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
With an unblinking approach to both obstacles and solutions, HERE’s Portrait Project will document major challenges faced by New York’s independent performing artists. The inspiration for the project came from working with members of the HERE Artist Residency Program (HARP), which provides long-term developmental and production support to New York based performing artists.

The centerpiece of the project will be 30 short documentary portraits featuring a diverse group of artists living in New York City’s 5 boroughs who work in theater, dance, opera, music, puppetry, media arts, and other performing arts genres. The films will capture thereal lives of working artists, transporting the audience inside their homes, rehearsal spaces, backstage, and through the streets of New York.

The series will be released on an interactive website over 2 years beginning in Spring 2010. It will be organized around 10 major issues to be determined over the next few weeks in collaboration with partner organizations from all 5 boroughs. Proposed topics include creative real estate, career longevity, family balance, arts activism, and day/night jobs.
